This is an update to Congressional Votes in the Trump Administration to Date.
The prior post went through January 24. Since then:
Jan 30 (Cloture on Rex Tillerson): 56-43-1. Durbin and Duckworth were nays. Only Dems who were not were Heitkamp (D-ND), Manchin (D-WV), Warner (D-VA). Heinrich (D-NM) did not vote. The Republicans again vote as a block.
Jan 31 (Confirmation of Elaine Chao for Transportation): 93-6-1. The one is McConnell, and really my only objection to this one is that she’s his wife, so don’t really care that most Dems, including my senators, voted yes. Standard political appointment that I would not object to by any other Republican president. For the record, the nays are: Booker (D-NJ), Gillibrand (D-NY), Merkley (D-OR), Sanders (I-VT), Schumer (D-NY), and Warren (D-MA).
Feb 1 (Confirmation of Rex Tillerson for State): 56-43-1. Almost the same as on cloture, except that Heinrich (D-NM) voted nay and Coons (D-DE) did not vote.
Skipping past some procedural things:
Feb 7 (Confirmation of Betsy DeVos): 50-50. No Dems voted for her, and two Republicans “defected” (Collins (R-ME) and Murkowski (R-AK)), although I suspect they were given permission to do so with the understanding that it would not matter, so as to help them politically.
On this vote, as has been widely discussed, Jill Stein decided to blame the Dems for the confirmation, which is just wacky. So it causes me to wonder, is she actually just an idiot (possible, sure), or does she know it no longer matters that what she says has no basis in truth, that actually knowing the facts seems too hard or unimportant to many, so she gets her followers (whoever they may be at this point) to agree regardless of the complete lack of accuracy since they like the message? This certainly seems to be working for the Republicans, so perhaps Stein just willfully lied and perhaps it really doesn’t matter to her supporters what the truth is. I think that’s probably the answer, disgusting as it is. That strengthens my desire to occasionally do posts like this one, boring as it may be, as I think having facts matters.
Feb 7 (Cloture on Sessions): 52-47-1. Sessions is the one, of course. Manchin (D-WV) (of course it’s Manchin) is the lone Democrat voting for cloture. Likely preview of the vote on the nomination.
